Our Tips for Ruka
A few of our personal favourites
There is so much to experience in Ruka and Kuusamo that choosing where to start can be difficult. These are a few places and experiences that we personally enjoy and happily recommend to our guests — from a sauna above the slopes to some of our favourite walks in the surrounding nature.
Base Eat & Heat – our favourite
If we had to choose one special Ruka experience, Base Eat & Heat would be high on the list. Located at the top of Ruka, Base combines a restaurant with a sauna in a rather spectacular setting.
Enjoy the slopes, good food and sauna with views over the surrounding landscape. Remember to book your sauna slot well in advance, especially during busy weeks.
Our tip: Time your visit for late afternoon and enjoy the changing light over Ruka.
Try something different - Ruka Winter Weekly Program
Ruka's weekly program includes plenty of activities beyond skiing, from winter nature experiences to more adventurous ways of enjoying the Arctic landscape.
Our tip: One of the more memorable experiences is river floating — floating safely in icy water in a thermal rescue suit while surrounded by winter nature. It sounds slightly crazy, but that's part of the fun.
Konttainen – an easy walk with wonderful views
Konttainen is one of our favourite nearby nature destinations. The relatively short and accessible trail takes you to the summit, where on a clear day the views stretch far across the forests and fells — even towards Posio.
At the base of Konttainen, it is also possible to feed Siberian jays, which may even eat from your hand. Raw ground beef is a favorite treat of these birds.
Our tip: The landscape is especially beautiful around sunrise and sunset. Trail to the top of Konttainen is relatively easy access and walk from parking lot takes about 45 minutes.
Myllykoski – rapids, bridges and an old mill
For a slightly longer nature excursion, we recommend Myllykoski in the Oulanka area.
The powerful rapids, hanging bridges, old mill and surrounding forest make this one of the classic Kuusamo landscapes. An easy way to visit is to drive to Basecamp Oulanka and walk approximately 2.5 km along the trail to Myllykoski.
Our tip: Basecamp Oulanka also has a café and restaurant, making it a convenient starting and finishing point for the trip.
Cross-country skiing, snowmobiling & outdoor routes
Up-to-date information on the maintenance of cross-country ski tracks and snowmobile routes can be found at:
https://kuusamo.fluentprogress.fi/outdoors
Our tip: The same website also provides information on wilderness huts, campfire shelters, and hiking routes in the area.
Look for the Northern Lights
On clear, dark nights, the Northern Lights can often be seen around Ruka from autumn through spring.
For the best chance, get away from artificial lights and find an open view towards the northern sky. The open areas around Konttainen and the lakes Vuosseli and Rukajärvi can be good places to watch the sky when conditions are favourable.
Our tip: Check the cloud forecast as well as aurora activity. A clear sky is just as important as a good aurora forecast — and sometimes the best displays appear when you least expect them.
Enjoy Ruka your way
These are only a few of our favourites. Whether your perfect Ruka day means first tracks on the slopes, a quiet walk through a snowy forest, sauna after an adventure or simply watching the northern sky, we hope you find some of the same magic here that made Ruka so special to our family. If you have something particular what you'd like to experience, we're always happy to help you and share our local knowledge.
Enjoy your stay!
